History Of Gretsch Guitars
Gretsch was originally founded in 1883 by a man called Friedrich Gretsch, but most people who follow the development of electric guitars don’t believe that the company’s best years began until much later than this, in the 1950s. This is because it was during the 50s and 60s that the company first produced the 6120 Nashville, White Falcon, Country Blub and the Duo Jet (which was a chambered solidbody guitar).
Like many guitar companies, true success began when Chet Atkins, who was one of the top guitarists in this day, endorsed the company’s guitars. This set Gretsch electric guitars against the main competition of Fender and Gibson. Other notable artists to use Gretsch electric guitars included The Monkees, Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison and John Squire (of the Stone Roses). It is also well known that Pet Townshend, who was the guitarist for The Who, used a Gretsch 6120 on the Who’s Next record.
